COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS INTRODUCTION BY LJILJANA ORTOLJA-BAIRD
Launched in conjunction with Bas Meeuws’ first exhibition in India, Spring in the Wintertime brings together the artist’s Dutch still life flowers with new and previously unpublished work inspired by Mughal botanical motifs produced in conversation with Tasveer.
Meeuws utilises digital photography to create contemporary flower pieces in the way of the of modern Dutch masters during the Golden Age of the 17th century: flower by flower, layer by layer. Informed by floral motifs seen in illuminated Mughal manuscripts and monuments from around the same time, Meeuws latest series, which forms a major part of this book and the accompanying exhibition, is a reflection of a cross-fertilisation between eastern and western artistic traditions but employing the same techniques of representation as his Dutch works.
Alongside 48 colour illustrations of Meeuws Dutch and Indian work, the publication features an introduction by Ljiljana Ortolja-Baird.
